An Unusual Way To Curb A Dog's Barking!

Did you know that dogs cannot bear the smell of pigs?!

The above was found out accidentally by a Texas scientist whilst looking for a way to quieten his Cairn terrier. A spritzer consisting of the smell of a pig was found to completely dumbfound the terrier and stop him from barking, the compound was then tested on groups of dogs and was shown to produce the same effect.

The smell of the (male) pig contains a steroid and pheromone known as androstenone which gets secreted through the pig's saliva and fat.

Apart from having a perplexing effect on the dogs, the compound is proven to be totally harmless to our canine friends.

Although the above research proved pretty conclusive, please don't be tempted to try this at home by substituting the complex pig compound with a packet of smoky bacon crisps or a ham sandwich.....until next time readers ;-)

5 Weird Cat Websites That Only A True Cat Lover Would Visit!

My obsession with the canine and feline often brings me into contact with the weird and wonderful and I would just like to share a few of the craziest cat websites that I have stumbled upon.
  • The Cat Scan Anybody who thought their life was incomplete because they hadn't fulfilled their life's aim of finding a blog that proudly presents cats sitting on scanners can relax now....hey...you can even send a picture of YOUR cat sat on a copier!
  • Procatinator This site actually had me questioning my sanity...I started to enjoy it! Imagine cheesy cat videos accompanied by even cheesier tunes and you won't be far off the mark.Don't like the video that's loaded?...no problem...just hit 'show me another cat' at the top left and you can while away your time with cats doing crazy things to some pretty cool tunes...enjoy!
  • Dressacat I dare you to take a look at this site and not try dressing a cat. If you have young children they will love this site...they can even dress a dog too!
  • Meowmania If you've ever sensed that your friends or family think that you are totally crackers then this really is the site for you. Please believe me when I tell you that I didn't plan to be a grown man furiously left-clicking on a computer screen (left-click to start the cats) to generate cats that announce their arrival with their very own meow...but it happened! You might want to close the blinds or draw the curtains for this one or everyone's suspicions about you may well get confirmed.
  • Cat Bounce If you get caught interacting on this website you only have yourself to blame! I kind of struggled with the hang of it at first with clicking the 'wut the wut' on the top left, but I persevered, spent 20 minutes of my life playing it, and will probably struggle to function in normal society now. Again, the kids will love it but whatever you do..don't let them click the 'make it rain' function top right....sssshhh. ;-)

Don't Lie To Your Dog!

Research has shown that lying to man's best friend may not be a great idea as they will stop trusting you.

A test study showed that when dogs were pointed toward empty food containers after being pointed toward full ones the dogs involved in the study became mistrusting. In fact, the human trickery led the dogs to become so mistrusting that they continually wouldn't respond to the researchers pointing at food again!

I'm not taking any chances at playtime now and may just give the ball to my furry friend every time!

Why Does My Dog Like To Lick Me?

Your dog likes to lick you because they enjoy licking each other. Dogs lick you for four main reasons'

  • They are showing you affection
  • They are healing you
  • They are grooming you
  • They are communicating their needs to you
There is actually another reason that your dog chooses to lick you...you taste good! They enjoy licking the salt from the surface of your skin.

Cat Lover? This Cool Interactive Website Allows You To Play With Cats In Rescue Centres Online!

Hey...I stumbled across a really great website for cat lovers today!

It allows you to play online with cats in rescue centres across the U.S. and Canada (from anywhere) on your Smartphone, Tablet or PC

The Lowdown
I'm UK based and the cats at the first rescue centre I tried were unavailable (time difference) but I went to a rescue centre in New York and was soon able to play with the cats there. I really enjoyed it, thought it was a really nice thing to share and am impressed at the ingenuity of the idea to allow cat lovers to interact with the kitties and potentially find new owners for them too!

Don't worry about the cats being overstimulated as the rescue centre can limit access to 'play time'.

I was also really impressed with how interactive the website was, the fact that you can even take a photo of the cats that you play with and I know a few cat lovers of my acquaintance who will find it hard to stay away from the site once they find it and use it.

It's FREE to use, it's HERE and I think you will love it! Please share this post on social media to allow other cat lovers to find this resource.

Interesting Tip If Your Cat Or Dog Goes Missing From Home...

Here's an interesting, 'thinking outside the box' tip I came across recently that has the potential to be helpful if your pet goes missing from home and you've tried the usual advice and tactics.

Try hanging some of your family's unwashed clothes (sweaters, t-shirts etc) and your pet's own unwashed bedding on your washing line. The theory is that, as cats and dogs have an enhanced sense of smell compared to us, the scent will carry on the air and your pet may pick up on this and can use it as a marker to sniff their way home.

If all else fails then this may be worth a try.

There Is A Tool That Enables You To Tweet/Email Like A Cat!

Just when you think you have seen it all....

I came across a site today that 'makes your emails, tweets, comments and text into cat puns'

At present, the site has 86 built in words and character changes that allows you to communicate like a feline to your heart's content.

Did I like it?
Strangely it grew on me! My first attempt actually didn't even change into anything but, being both a bit juvenile and a bit geeky, I persevered and found myself able to talk like a tabby in no time.

Who's It For?
I can recommend it for anybody looking for a bit of harmless feline-related fun who isn't going to sweat about getting the time used back and cat lovers/owners who are looking to become fluent in cat-speak that may be looking for a fun little tool.

It's FREE and its HERE and you only live once....enjoy!

5 Dog Superstitions That You May Not Have Heard Of.....

Many of my regular readers will know that I like to dig out little-known and unusual information about our canine and feline friends and recently I have been researching superstitions. Here are 5 superstitions that I have uncovered about dogs...
  • It is considered good luck if 3 white dogs are seen together.
  • If you are on your way to a business meeting or appointment then you may want to bump into a spotted or black and white dog on the way there as this is considered to be lucky.
  • A greyhound that has a white spot on its forehead is considered to be a sign of good fortune.
  • Many fishermen regard dogs as unlucky and will not take one out to sea, this superstition even goes as far as not saying the word 'dog' whilst out on the waves!
  • There is an old superstition that says if a dog eats grass then it is going to rain.
